Sharetop Mechanical Variable Optical Attenuator (MVOA)
Product OverviewPrecise optical power control is an important consideration in fiber optic communication systems, from component-level testing to the development and maintenance of optical transmission equipment. Optical passive components provide the fundamental functions needed to manage signal transmission and support reliable system operation.
Sharetop’s Mechanical Variable Optical Attenuator (MVOA) is designed to provide adjustable optical signal attenuation across a wide wavelength range of 1260–1650 nm. With an attenuation range of 0–60 dB, it enables users to regulate optical power according to different testing and application requirements.
Combining low insertion loss, high return loss, and low polarization-dependent loss (PDL), this compact device is suitable for fiber optic testing setups and optical signal management applications. It also complements the optical components used in the broader development, integration, and testing of optical communication equipment.

Working Principle
A mechanical variable optical attenuator adjusts the attenuation applied to an optical signal through a manually operated mechanical mechanism. By changing the attenuation setting, users can regulate the optical power delivered to the output without changing the source itself.
This adjustable control allows different optical power levels to be established for testing, measurement, and evaluation. The actual attenuation mechanism depends on the device’s internal mechanical design.

Main Applications
1. Optical Power Control and Measurement
The attenuator provides a practical way to adjust optical signal levels in fiber optic setups. It can be used when establishing target power levels for optical measurements and evaluating signal behavior under different attenuation conditions.
2. Fiber Optic Component Testing
During component evaluation, adjustable attenuation helps control the optical power delivered to the device under test. This supports measurements and performance analysis under varying signal conditions.
3. Optical Receiver Evaluation
By varying the optical power reaching a receiver, the attenuator can support receiver sensitivity measurements and performance evaluation across different input power levels.
4. Optical Communication Equipment Development and Testing
Optical passive components play an important role in the development, integration, and testing of communication equipment. The MVOA can be incorporated into compatible test arrangements where adjustable optical power is required, subject to the specifications of the overall setup.
Optical components form the foundation of effective optical communication systems, while transmission equipment brings these components together to meet system-level requirements.
